I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.

If you've been watching the news, you may have seen that a devastating tornado hit Windsor, Colorado, a town very close to where I live. While my physical property is untouched, my heart isn't. How many of us take our normal, day-to-day lives for granted? Do we always need a disastrous event to remember what's really important in life?

Yesterday's tornado and aftermath cemented a decision I've been trying to make recently: Starting next Friday, May 30, the office will be closed every Friday for the rest of the summer. It's been a pretty rough year here so far and I think it's time to take a little break to pursue some relaxation and self-care. Family and friends are the most important things I have in my life and it's time for me to pay more attention to them. While I'll still be as hard working and dedicated as I ever have been, I'm simply going to do it four days a week this summer instead of five.

If you'd like to help the victims of yesterday's tornado, the ABC affiliate in Denver has a tornado blog listing ways we can help.

This weekend, as we celebrate Memorial Day by remembering all of those brave women and men who went before us and gave their lives to make this country stronger, let's think about sticking together and taking care of ourselves and our neighbors. I can't think of a better way to honor our fallen soldiers.

Then, fire up that grill, hang out in the back yard and relax!

Life is like a blanket too short. You pull it up and your toes rebel, you yank it down and shivers meander about your shoulder; but cheerful folks manage to draw their knees up and pass a very comfortable night.
